Informal Music Concert - Hurstpierpoint College

Informal Music Concert

From Tuesday 21st to Thursday the 23rd of November, the prep school’s Michaelmas term informal concert series took place. This initiative provides an excellent opportunity for our young musicians to perform in a relaxed setting after school. The concerts were held in the Music School Hall, with friends, families, and teachers invited to support them.

The Years 7 and 8 students from the Senior Prep School performed in the first concert, on Tuesday. This concert featured a wide variety of musical genres and composers, from Mozart to Declan McKenna. A noteworthy performance was by the Year 8 band, showcasing the enthusiasm and initiative of Prep School students in creating their own ensemble and organising rehearsals during their free time together.

On Wednesday, some courageous and eager Years 3 and 4 students took to the stage to perform. For some of these musicians, this was the first time performing in front of an audience. Therefore, a supportive, warm environment like these informal concerts is ideal to boost confidence and provide them with something to work towards, with a sense of accomplishment at the end. Among the performers was one student who had only been learning the trombone for five weeks – a very impressive feat to perform after such a short period!

Finally, the Year 5 and 6 students finished the week’s concert series with an enjoyable showcase of music from a vast variety of genres. What was particularly impressive about this concert was the number of students who signed up to perform, with 27 students performing, and some even performed pieces on multiple instruments.

Overall, these concerts have provided an excellent taste of music development within the Prep School.

Well done to everyone who performed in the concerts. We would like to thank everyone who has attended these concerts and provided such an encouraging atmosphere to our performers. Neil Matthews, Director of Music
