We are ambitious for every pupil to achieve their full potential by fostering a love of learning in Years 3 to 6. The aim is to ignite a child’s imagination, promoting a sense of exploration and discovery of the world around them. Our key message to our pupils is that working hard simply means doing their best.
Whilst the acquisition of knowledge is important at Hurst, we develop learning skills that will last a lifetime. We prepare pupils for the next stage of their education and for future life experiences.
Pupils in Years 3 to 6 study the following subjects:
- English
- Mathematics
- Science
- PSHCEE (Hurst 4 Life)
- Geography
- History
- French
- Latin
- Religion, Ethics and Philosophy
- Music
- Art
- Drama
- Computer Science
- PE
- Swimming
In Years 3 and 4, most subjects are taught by form tutors, which provides a strong academic and pastoral focus for the children. Our pupils also benefit from being taught by subject specialists for Science, Music, Drama, PE and French. This leads to a gradual transition to subject specialist teaching in all subjects from Year 5.
Pupils are encouraged to be active and independent in their learning, to participate in discussions, to take responsibility and assume leadership roles as they progress through school.
Timetable
Timetables from Year 3 upwards are in line with the Senior School, to enable an easier transition for pupils as they progress through the College. Lessons are one hour in duration and the timetable extends over two weeks – known as Week A and Week B.
