Year 4 adventure trip - Hurstpierpoint College

Year 4 adventure trip

On a sunny May morning, Year 4 began their two-day adventure trip to Hindleap Warren Outdoor Centre. There was much anticipation, excitement and a few nerves as the children boarded the minibuses. For some, it would be their first overnight stay away from home.

The pupils were given a tour of the site. They then worked in teams to share their expectations for the visit – including the expected level of behaviour and the expected levels of fun! The first challenge was bed-making! There were some very impressive techniques for putting on a duvet cover, as those with the skills helped those who found it tricky. Once the rooms were prepared, the first outdoor activities could begin.

Many children overcame their fears of the dark to navigate the underground tunnels, crawling through tight spaces when it was pitch-black required nerves of steel.  Staff were impressed with the willingness of all to embrace the muddy conditions of the obstacle course. Mud angels were created, and wellies were waterlogged!

The See Saw climb required pupils to scale a great height. With the support of their harnesses, they had to make a leap of faith onto the suspended see saw beam. The climbing wall stretched the pupils’ scaling skills even further. Many children reached the top of the wall and abseiled down with agility. They all achieved a higher climb on their second attempt and felt immensely proud of their achievements.

The evening began with a walk through the beautiful woodland to reach the campfire area. The children entertained the Hindleap staff with songs from the Year 3 and 4 play and a few better-known hits too. Toasting marshmallows and drinking hot chocolate was a fitting end to a brilliant first day. After the exercise and fresh air, the children were ready to settle down in their dormitories for the night. They coped brilliantly sleeping in unfamiliar surroundings and were certainly ready for a hearty breakfast the following morning.

The sun shone again throughout the second day and, despite being tired, the children and staff enjoyed their next programme of events. The Earth Walk gave pupils the opportunity to create woodland potions, the tranquil surroundings also provided them with the resources to create some natural art. Trust skills were developed as they guided a blindfolded partner through the tricky terrain.

A delicious lunch and visit to the gift shop concluded our time at Hindleap Warren. The journey back to school included some much-needed power naps. We were so proud of the behaviour and enthusiasm shown by our Year 4 pupils. We were also delighted with their feedback. Phrases such as ’It was the best time ever!’ and ‘It was amazing!’ said it all.
