Ensemble Concert - Hurstpierpoint College

Ensemble Concert

On the 20 March, many of our Music department ensembles performed in an evening concert, showcasing the high calibre of musical collaboration at Hurst. This included students from all year groups of the Senior School and Sixth Form and was an excellent opportunity for the Ensembles to show what they had been working on this academic year together, and for them to be inspired by other performances.

The first ensemble to perform, the newly formed Cello Ensemble, consisting of four Lower Sixth cellists, made their performance debut. This is a new ensemble within the department, led by Miss Rachel Threlfall, and provides a unique opportunity for cellists to work with likeminded cellists, try out new repertoire and develop their collaboration skills. Some of these cellists also performed in the String Ensemble, an ensemble with a large number of student musicians involved. They gave an excellent performance, thoroughly enjoyed by the audience.

The concert showcased the high standard of flautists within the department, with three flute ensembles performing – one ensemble made up of Vth students, another of Shell students, and finally a duet by two Sixth Form students. The students performed exceptionally well and the Music School was filled with an abundance of beautiful melodies.

The evening finished with an outstanding, upbeat trio of performances by the Senior School Jazz Band, who performed feel-good audience favourites. These pieces also featured superb solos from students – a fantastic experience for those involved to develop their performance skills not only as an ensemble member, but also as a soloist.
