Upper Sixth students attend economics conference in London

On Monday, Upper Sixth Economists attended the annual PolEconUK A-level economics conference in London to hear about the latest economic developments, which will be extremely useful to add into their essays to help them achieve the highest marks.

The day started with a useful update of the latest macroeconomic indicators, and was followed by a superb historic account of the lives of John Maynard Keynes and Irving Fisher from Tim “The Undercover Economist” Harford. After a short break three more speakers covered topics as wide ranging as the history of trade unionism in the UK to the possibilities open to the UK post-Brexit, all of which were extremely interesting, even if they relied upon many assumptions that are difficult to predict. The highlights of the final session were BBC Health correspondent Hugh Pym, who spoke about the economics of healthcare, as well as a member of the Institute of Fiscal Studies, who explained the impacts on the public finances of the various election pledges made by the parties for today’s general election.

“Overall the day was a great success full of excellent information, and it was a good way to round off was has been a very busy term,” Liam Agate, Head of Economics.
