Chess Congress - Hurstpierpoint College

Chess Congress

Last week, Hurst attended Cottesmore School’s annual ‘Chess Congress’, with over fifteen other schools from the area present. The Congress is hosted every year, and aims to be a celebration of chess talent from both independent and state schools in the Southwest.

The standard was as high as ever; of the 54 children in attendance, there were 5 England players and at least 12-15 Sussex County players. Considering the calibre of the opposition, the Hurst team did extremely well to secure 8 points out of a possible 18. Jake M (7F) secured 4 points, and Annie V (8U) and Harrison B (8U) secured 2 points each.

All three of our pupils had very tough games, with Jake beating a Sussex U14 player, but unfortunately suffering defeat by an England player. Jake sadly lost his final game, just missing out on coming joint 2nd! Annie finished joint top girl, having secured a couple of excellent wins and fighting very well in her losses. Harrison lost to some heavy favourites, but certainly made them work very hard for their victory!
