Brand management at Wimbeldon

Upper Sixth business students attend workshop and tour of grounds

Last Friday, a group of Upper Sixth Business students visited the All England Tennis and Croquet Club at Wimbledon for a brand management workshop and tour of the grounds.

The workshop was extremely interesting, charting the development of the tournament during the twentieth century, as well as highlighting the specific features of the quintessentially English brand which distinguishes the tournament from the multitude of sporting events that take place each year.

There was also a specific focus on the various revenue streams Wimbledon uses to fund the tournament: over £1 million a day is taken during the tournament in various Wimbledon gift shops; £26 million a year is taken in ticket sales – not to mention the main earner of selling TV rights across the world and the debenture tickets that cost £80,000 to secure a seat on Centre Court for five years!

After lunch the students took a tour of the grounds, including visits to Centre Court, the newly- refurbished Court One, as well as the BBC studios and players’ interview room. The trip culminated with a visit to the museum and, of course, the gift shop, where Mr Agate was delighted to find that the famous Wimbledon towels had been reduced to half price!

“Overall, the experience was extremely engaging and provided the students with a real feel for all the hard work that goes into running an international sporting event, and maintaining the image of one of the most recognisable brands in the world,” Liam Agate, Head of Business & Economics.
