After they visited the Ukraine Embassy, the students visited the newly completed USA Embassy on January 24th. They had a tour of the building, assisted by public affairs officers, before engaging in a discussion with a political correspondence officer to ask questions. Our students asked about the prominence of federalism in America’s constitutional culture and the impact of this on their diplomatic stances, the privatisation of healthcare, and the impact of this on those least financially equipped. They also discussed the right to bear arms found in the 2nd Amendment, and how the inferred right to self-defence can exist alongside an originalist judicial philosophy, particularly in a conservative-leaning court. This was a particularly beneficial and eye-opening visit, clarifying any structural queries before the students’ turn at stepping up to represent the USA in Bilbao.
