Eighty Year 7 pupils enjoyed a memorable and enriching Roman Morning, combining literature, history and hands-on learning to bring their Latin studies vividly to life.
The morning began with an engaging talk from bestselling author Caroline Lawrence, who explored a range of fascinating myths and legends. Through stories such as the adventures of Odysseus, pupils deepened their understanding of classical storytelling while also considering how these tales continue to inspire modern interpretations.
Building on this, pupils turned their focus to Mount Vesuvius, linking closely to their studies of Pompeii. In a creative and energetic session, they designed, built and painted their own model volcanoes. The highlight came when these creations were brought to life using a mixture of bicarbonate of soda, washing-up liquid and vinegar, producing a series of dramatic and highly enjoyable eruptions.
To conclude the morning, pupils watched Last Day of Pompeii, a documentary that powerfully illustrated the devastating impact of the eruption. This provided a fitting and thought-provoking end to the event, reinforcing their understanding of the historical significance of Pompeii.
The combination of storytelling, creativity, science and Classics made for an engaging and memorable experience, rounding off this year’s Latin course in an inspiring and dynamic way.
