Year 7 pupils were given an exciting glimpse into the world of work during a recent Careers Morning focused on non-traditional career paths. The event brought together influential professionals from a range of industries, offering pupils a unique opportunity to learn about diverse roles and ask questions about their future ambitions.
The morning featured guest speakers, each delivering a talk followed by a question-and-answer session. Through their presentations, pupils gained insight into day-to-day responsibilities, career journeys, and the skills required to succeed in less conventional industries.
Among the speakers was Katherine O’Connell, a highly accomplished figure in the space and sustainability sector. Currently serving as Chair for the Global Network on Sustainability in Space, she also holds roles as Founder of Primary Space, Advisor for Quantum Exponential, Mentor for Creative Destruction Lab’s Global Space Stream, and Trustee for UKSEDS. Previously, she was Chief Executive of the UK Space Agency. Katherine shared her remarkable career journey, highlighting the academic pathways, professional experiences, and determination required to reach leadership positions in a cutting-edge global industry.
Maximillian Parker-Smith, founder of the award-winning Maximillian Design, a landscape and garden design company gave an engaging account of building his own business, from early studies through to establishing a successful creative brand.
Also speaking was Stuart Jellis, Executive Head Chef at Hurst, who offered pupils a fascinating insight into the fast-paced and creative world of professional catering. Stuart spoke about his career journey within the hospitality industry, from early training and kitchen roles through to leading large teams and overseeing food provision across the school.
Each speaker outlined their current role and typical day-to-day tasks, provided background on the organisations they work for, and reflected on the qualifications and experiences that helped shape their careers. From GCSEs and A-levels to university degrees, professional training, and past job roles, pupils were given a clear picture of the many different paths into employment.
