Year 5 pupils recently embarked on an exciting educational journey to the Weald and Downland Living Museum as part of their history studies on the Anglo-Saxons. The immersive trip offered students a hands-on experience of Saxon daily life, bringing their classroom learning vividly to life.
During the visit, the pupils participated in three engaging workshops. They learned how Saxons used herbs to create medicinal remedies, constructed a traditional wattle fence, and even wielded a wooden maul to split a tree trunk—just as Anglo-Saxon villagers would have done.
One of the highlights was stepping inside a reconstructed Saxon house, where pupils experienced the sights, sounds, and smells of early medieval life. Around the hearth, they listened to the legendary tale of Beowulf, imagining how such stories would have been shared in the evenings by firelight.
