Year 5 Explore Herstmonceux Observatory - Hurstpierpoint College

Year 5 pupils took part in a fascinating and hands-on science trip to Herstmonceux Observatory, where they brought their classroom learning on Earth and Space to life.

The day began with a journey through space-themed corridor exhibits, where pupils discovered captivating facts about our planet, the solar system, and the wider universe. From interactive displays to real-world models, the exhibits sparked curiosity and deepened their understanding of key scientific concepts.

Outside, the Discovery Park and water exhibits offered plenty of opportunities for practical exploration. Pupils worked together to solve challenges, test ideas, and engage in collaborative learning, all while having fun.

A highlight of the trip was the telescope tour, where pupils learned how astronomers study the night sky. They were amazed by the mechanics of the telescope and the dome roof, gaining insight into how technology helps us explore space. The excitement continued as pupils operated real robot arms, simulating how astronauts handle equipment in space, a task that added a fun, competitive twist to the day.

The experience was rounded off with a lively science show, featuring eye-catching demonstrations that wowed the audience and reinforced key scientific principles in an engaging way.

The trip was a memorable blend of discovery, teamwork, and excitement, helping pupils connect their classroom learning to the real world and inspiring a deeper interest in science.
