Year 4 Produce WWII Shelters - Hurstpierpoint College

This term, Year 4 pupils have been delving into the history of World War II, bringing their learning to life through an exciting cross-curricular project. Linking their studies with Technology, the class explored the design and construction of wartime shelters, gaining both historical insight and practical engineering skills.

Each pupil designed and built their own model shelter, mastering the use of junior hacksaws to cut wooden frames. They applied principles of structural engineering, incorporating frame and shell structures, triangulation, and struts to reinforce their models for strength and realism.

To make the shelters even more authentic, pupils added simple electrical circuits, learning how switches, bulbs, and the flow of electricity work in a safe, hands-on way. This addition highlighted the challenges of living in dark, enclosed spaces during the war, while giving pupils valuable experience in basic electronics.

The project was a brilliant blend of history and creativity, allowing pupils to understand not only how shelters were built, but why structural strength was so vital during wartime.
