Hurstpierpoint College | Community Service

Community Service

Community Service involves both regular weekly commitments as well as larger, one off, projects. These projects are based in the local community and offer support in local primary schools, nursing homes and environmental projects.

Year 11 participate in several local off-site and on-site projects and these also contribute to their Silver Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Awards.

Lower Sixth students are encouraged to develop community projects and options at times to suit them and can form part of their Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Awards.

Noteworthy projects

There are many noteworthy community service projects that Hurst students have set up themselves over the last few years, including:

  • Reading Buddies – groups of students visit local primary schools to support pupils with the development of their reading
  • Cards for Kindness – students write cards to care home residents to stimulate conversations and provide contact
  • Language Leaders – Sixth Form linguists visit local primary schools to lead sessions on learning French
  • Sorting Centre helpers – students spend time at charity shop sorting centres helping to process donations for sale
  • Civic Projects – students maintain the grounds at a number of local churches and other community spaces for the benefit of everyone

Community Action Day

In the summer term we hold a Community Action Day when all students visit charities, schools and community organisations to help out for the day. Students carry out work such as gardening, painting, washing mini-buses and volunteering in charity shops.
