Prep and Pre-Prep celebrate European Day of Languages - Hurstpierpoint College

Although there was a more virtual approach to our European Languages Day this year, there were a wide range of activities on offer as both Prep and Pre-Prep pupils were keen to be involved.

During tutor sessions in the Prep School, pupils had the opportunity to answer the register in as many different languages as they could, make some flags, and listen to a short presentation on why we should learn another language. We have many pupils who speak another language, and those who were confident enough said a few words in their mother tongue at the end of the presentation.

Years 3 and 4 learned some animal names in French, Spanish, German, Polish, Portuguese, Swedish and Italian and drew pictures to illustrate these. Among the highlights were the German and Francophonie masterclasses lead by Mrs Butler and Mr Clifford respectively. Years 5 and 6 were excited to learn some key German phrases and about German culture. In addition, the Games Department ran a tournament with a European theme. Our pupils displayed true ‘Hurst Spirit’, played in mixed ability teams and even made up national anthems in some cases.

Pre-Prep pupils celebrated their very own European Day of Languages this year. They enjoyed listening to Mrs Boucke as she read the Three Little Pigs in Spanish and impressed her by counting to 10 in Spanish! They also enjoyed listening to Mrs Carvil-Romano reading in Italian and were able to spot some familiar words – mozzarella, pasta, finito. During the afternoon they looked at a map of Europe and coloured in some flags for display. Finally, they had their Pain au Chocolate and orange juice – a great way to end the day!

Many thanks to all those involved for making this a day for the pupils to remember Alison Filkins, Head of MFL, Prep School
