Year 6 pupils visit zoo for evolution topic

Friday 13th was certainly not unlucky for Year 6 pupils as they went on a Science trip to Marwell Zoo. The weather was perfect, meaning many of the animals were active and visible and the group had some wonderful close-up views, especially of the magnificent giraffes and rhinos.

Pupils attended a workshop about adaptation which will thread into the children’s later topic on Evolution, and observed a huge variety of animals, complimenting the current topic on Classification. It was a fabulous chance for them to learn about conservation work and see endangered animals, some of which are considered extinct in the wild.

“The new tropical house, the aviary, wallabies and meerkats and are just some of the areas where there are no barriers between the animals and the children and they could observe these fascinating animals at very close quarters”, Lindsay Moakes, Prep School Science Teacher.
