The JPS Book Awards reached an exciting conclusion with a celebratory ceremony held in the New Bury Theatre, marking the culmination of a year-long reading journey for pupils and staff alike. The event brought together shortlisted authors, enthusiastic readers, and members of the school community to recognise outstanding contributions to children’s literature.
The ceremony formed the highlight of the Book Awards programme, which also included a series of workshops designed to inspire creativity and foster a love of reading. These sessions gave pupils the unique opportunity to engage directly with authors, gaining insight into the writing process and the stories behind the books.
This year’s shortlisted authors represented a diverse range of genres and storytelling styles. They included Onjali Q. Raúf for The Game I Will Never Forget, Sam Sedgman for The Forbidden Atlas, Helen Rutter for The Boy With Big Decisions, Jack Mackay for Gloam, and Fleur Hitchcock for Murder at Wintertide.
Following the awards presentation, attendees had the chance to meet the authors during a book signing and sales event, as well as listen to talks where the writers shared their inspirations and experiences.
The top honour was awarded to Jack Mackay for Gloam, which was named the overall winner. Meanwhile, Onjali Q. Raúf’s The Game I Will Never Forget received a Highly Commended distinction, reflecting its strong impact on readers.
The event was widely praised as a fitting finale to the awards, celebrating not only literary talent but also the enthusiasm for reading within the school community.
