Upper Sixth Visit F45 Brighton - Hurstpierpoint College

In November, Upper Sixth PE and BTEC Sport students visited F45 Training Brighton Central for a look ‘under the bonnet’ of a global fitness franchise and to take part in one of its training sessions.

The visit offered a practical look at how theory taught in the classroom translates into a commercial sporting environment. Founder Jane, alongside coach Rachel, welcomed the group to the studio on Fleet Street and spoke openly about their eight years running the business in Brighton. They shared their journey from initial startup training in Los Angeles through to the studio’s recent developments, including a move towards HYROX-specific sessions and a partnership with Red Bull.

Students learned about the structure of the F45 franchise model, the demands of operating within the fitness industry, and the ways in which sports science underpins programming and coaching decisions. These discussions linked closely with areas of the PE and BTEC Sport specifications, particularly in relation to training methods, performance, and the commercialisation of sport.

The visit also included the opportunity to take part in one of F45’s signature 45-minute sessions, known as ‘Checkmate’. All students completed the workout, applying numerous theories and concepts studied in their courses. Experiencing the session firsthand helped to reinforce understanding of how these ideas are used in a real-world setting.

The session concluded with further discussion around current trends in the fitness sector, including a growing focus on long-term health and longevity. This provided useful context for students considering future study or careers within sport, fitness, or related industries.

We are grateful to Jane, Rachel, and the wider F45 team for their warm welcome and for giving our students a clear view of where sports science and business meet in practice.
