The Oracy Project - Hurstpierpoint College

The whole Lower Sixth cohort participated in the College’s unique Oracy Project. This involved delivering a speech to their peers on a topic they are passionate about.

Hurst College Sixth Form student delivers a presentation during the Oracy Project Grand Final, speaking to an audience. The project is designed to build confidence and develop the skill of communicating ideas with precision and impact, and preparing students for life beyond the College.

During tutor time, each student delivered a three-minute talk to their peers. The format required them to speak on a subject they had chosen themselves, shape an argument and hold the attention of an audience.

The Grand Final of the project was held in an assembly in April and the speeches showed the range of issues the students were willing to tackle.

One finalist discussed the effect of NIL (Name, Image and Likeness) rights and contracts in American college sport. Other topics were: accountability in the story of Adam and Eve; arguing for the United Kingdom to rejoin the European Union; and examining ‘shrinkflation’.

Congratulations to this year’s winner, Lara.
