Sports Leaders service day - Hurstpierpoint College

Sports Leaders service day

Following their internal mock exams, our Fifth Form Sports Leaders put their coaching experiences and learning into practice during their Service Day and came away with two qualifications.

The morning session was taken up with a ‘Rugby Ready course’. This is an official RFU coaching qualification that will allow our Sports Leaders to take a formal role in sports coaching sessions and can be used in work experience, university or job applications moving forward. They learnt about key aspects of coaching young people with a particular emphasis on safety both in planning and delivery of sessions. It was certainly a challenge, with a diverse range of abilities and expertise within the group, but our Sports Leaders thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

In the afternoon session our students undertook a Youth First Aid qualification, which looked at the basics of CPR, minor injury treatment and initial response to a casualty. Another challenging session but one in which they all learnt a huge amount. In particular, there were key lessons in terms of effective and calm communication, assessment of risk and injury and how to determine the best course of action should they find themselves in a first aid scenario.

Overall, an excellent day when the Sports Leaders were challenged and supported in equal measure and they achieved two recognised qualifications Jack Emmerson, PE and Sports Science Teacher/Head of Rugby
