So Lonely - Hurstpierpoint College

Pupils from Shell, Remove, and Fifth Form, along with students from the Lower Sixth, worked together this term to present So Lonely, a striking Dance Showcase inspired by ZooNation’sprofessional production Message In A Bottle. The performance followed the story of a village rooted in ritual and unity, led by Quest and his wife, Gaia. Joy turns to chaos when an unexpected attack shatters the peace. Their three children, Leto, Mati and Tana are violently separated and thrust into perilous journeys of survival.

Through movement rather than dialogue, the cast explored experiences of displacement, loss, and resilience. These themes hold particular relevance in today’s world where a person is forcibly displaced every two seconds as a result of conflict or persecution. The choreography gave our young performers the chance to express these ideas with clarity, using both strong ensemble work and quieter moments of reflection.

The creative process was shaped by music from The Police and Sting, echoing the soundtrack of ZooNation’s original production. ZooNation are well known for reimagining classic tales through Hip-Hop, with past works including fresh takes on Oliver Twist and Alice in Wonderland. Drawing on this inspiration, the cast combined Street, Contemporary, Ballet, and Tap, guided by teachers who specialise in each of these disciplines.

Working collaboratively across year groups enabled the dancers to refine their technique and take greater ownership of their choreography. Many of those involved are preparing for GCSE Dance, and the experience supported their development by introducing them to a range of styles and approaches.

Performed across two evenings in December, the Dance Showcase brought their hard work together with confidence and discipline, offering a thoughtful interpretation of a powerful story.
