Sixth Form French Students Out and About!

French students in the Sixth Form recently visited the British Film Institute in London, where they listened attentively to various sessions and lectures; some of which were entirely in French! They did really well to understand the material being discussed, and made impressive contributions post-lecture. The aim of the sessions was to help students to broaden their understanding of the A-level set texts, and of key themes such as the French ‘Nouvelle Vague’ (New Wave). In the afternoon, the students enjoyed a screening of Bande des filles (‘Girlhood’) directed by Celine Sciamma (2014), and they were able to apply all their learning from the morning session to this hugely topical film. A great day was had by all; what a way to kick start the A-level revision!

Several of our UVI French students (Alex G, Honor W, Liv M, and Felicity T) have also been busy with participating in a French Debating Competition at Charterhouse. This year marked Hurst’s debut in the world of French debating, and the team certainly did the College proud; the girls performed superbly against some tough opposition from Epsom, Sevenoaks, Winchester, and Charterhouse. They argued for and against the benefits and downfalls of immigration in Europe, the pros and cons of artificial intelligence, and discussed the topical question of whether extreme rap should be censored. Standing up and debating in a foreign language is no easy task, and it was outstanding to see the team presenting their arguments with clarity and conviction on each occasion. Well done all!
