Remove Pupils Visit The Design Museum - News - Hurst College

At the start of the Lent Term, the Design and Technology department took its Remove pupils to The Design Museum in London for an inspiring day of design exploration and hands-on learning.

The highlight of the trip was a practical lighting design workshop, which served as a springboard for the pupils’ next project: designing and manufacturing a light inspired by a period of design history from the last 150 years. During the session, pupils interacted with iconic lighting pieces such as a Book Light and George Carwardine’s classic Anglepoise from 1932. They analysed their design features and began developing new ideas for lighting based on user-centred briefs.

Beyond the workshop, pupils explored the museum’s permanent Designer Maker User exhibition, a fascinating showcase of almost 1,000 items spanning product design, architecture, engineering, fashion, and graphics from the 20th and 21st centuries.

The pupils returned to Hurst brimming with ideas and enthusiasm, ready to channel their inspiration and knowledge into their upcoming lighting projects.

Evie G, a pupil who attended the trip shared how she found the experience: “It was really cool to see a lot of the most famous advancements in design in the last 100 (ish) years, and especially to see people’s nominations on the crowd-sourced wall. I would have voted for Converse.”
