Remembrance services - Hurstpierpoint College

Remembrance services

On 11th November, members of the Prep School and the Senior School gathered in the college chapel for their annual services of remembrance, paying tribute to those who gave their lives in wars and conflicts past and present.

A carpet of more than 500 felt poppies, made by our Shell pupils, provided a moving display and set the scene for both remembrance services. Joe W (Year 8) and Matthew G (Fifth Form) played the Last Post at the prep and senior services respectively, and the whole college fell silent at 11am.

The emphasis of our commemorations was on the 193 former pupils and masters of Hurst College who had their lives taken whilst serving their country. The individual names of these men were read out by the Headmaster and as each name was called a student from the Sixth Form stood up to represent them. Due to the restriction on numbers in the Chapel, this meant that almost everyone was upstanding as the last name was read out. This tribute was a poignant reminder that we owe our freedom to those who sacrificed their future for us.
