Plants in the Classroom - Hurstpierpoint College

As part of her Tuesday service, Fia M, a Lower Sixth student introduced a sustainability initiative focused on bringing potted plants into classrooms across the College. The project aimed to improve focus in learning environments by making these spaces greener, while encouraging environmental awareness among pupils of all ages. Studies suggest that natural elements in classrooms can support concentration and wellbeing, making this a practical step with clear educational value.

The project began with presentations to Heads of Department during their regular meetings. This provided an opportunity for Fia to explain the idea, outline the benefits, and invite departments to take part. The response was positive, with several staff keen to support the initiative and help it develop across different areas of the College.

Keeping the project cost effective was an important consideration. Spider plants were sourced from the Biology department, and recycled tins were used as plant pots. These tins were collected by the College’s catering team and cleaned ready for reuse. Giving these materials a new purpose reduced waste and showed how sustainability can be built into everyday School life without significant expense.

The initiative was quickly taken up by the Prep School, where it proved particularly popular. From there, it expanded to include classrooms across the wider College. Fia worked closely with the Prep School Eco Committee, who helped with potting the plants and preparing them for distribution. Their involvement supported the practical work and gave younger pupils an active role in caring for their environment, while also encouraging leadership and shared responsibility.

Introducing plants into classrooms brings a range of benefits, including improved air quality, reduced stress, and better focus during lessons. These are qualities that support learning at every stage. It has been encouraging to see the project grow beyond its original scope and to watch different parts of the College working together on a shared sustainability initiative.
