Lower Sixth Visit the National Archives - Hurstpierpoint College

At the end of April, our Lower Sixth A Level historians embarked on an enriching trip to the National Archives in London. The purpose of the visit was to enhance their historical skills and provide them with a tangible insight into early modern history. The pupils participated in an Introduction to Document Research workshop, which focused on the English Civil War, aligning perfectly with their curriculum content.

During the workshop, the pupils had the unique opportunity to read private correspondence from King Charles I, Prince Rupert, and Queen Henrietta Maria. They also flicked through Civil War pamphlets and viewed one of only two original accounts of Charles I’s trial and death warrant. The significance of the documents they viewed cannot be overstated, as they provided a rare glimpse into the personal lives and political strategies of key historical figures during a pivotal period of England’s history.

After an insightful morning at the Archives, the pupils enjoyed a delicious lunch at Pizza Express, and took a leisurely walk through Kew Gardens in the sun.

This trip was designed to make history come alive for the pupils, allowing them to peer directly into the past and deepen their understanding of the English Civil War. It was an impactful experience that will undoubtedly spark curiosity and a greater enthusiasm for the topic.
