Leavers’ Service - Hurstpierpoint College

Leavers’ Service

Due to the extraordinary year it has been – and the restrictions that were still in place – this year’s Upper Sixth Leavers’ Service, on the last Saturday of June, was attended by students and staff only.

The Upper Sixth Prize Giving and speeches – by the Head Boy, Freddie Longley, and Head Girl, Lucy Jaffe, preceded the Leavers’ Service, which took the traditional format of a Eucharist with familiar hymns, sung by the Upper Sixth choir under the direction of Director of Music, Neil Matthews.

In her sermon, the Chaplain encouraged students to continue to reflect on their journey ahead, to never give up, to be honest and to listen carefully. At the end of the service the congregation moved outdoors to the Inner Quad to sing Jerusalem together for one final time, after which the choir sung John Rutter’s Gaelic Blessing, which moved many to tears.

Lunch was then served in the Inner Quad, where pupils received their long-awaited hoodies and yearbooks. The many photos, stories and comments made for good conversation and probably a tear or two more. The day was a fitting end to an extraordinary year and an opportunity for this exceptional year group to be together once more to celebrate their time at Hurst.
