Hurst Engineering Scheme - Hurstpierpoint College

Hurst Engineering Scheme

The winners of the first Hurst Engineering Scheme were announced today. Freddie H, James S and Sam H each received trophies and £25 Amazon vouchers.

Sponsored by Balfour Beatty, the judges commended the team for their innovate design and excellent presentation. Their project challenge was to improve connectivity between Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill. They achieved this through the design of a ‘green’ cycle network using e-bikes. Their proposal included the design for a community hub and an app to promote the use of the cycle scheme.

Head of STEM, Amanda Jayne launched the Hurst Engineering Scheme this year, inviting companies free-of-charge to provide projects and work alongside teams of students. Previously, Hurst students participated in the Engineering Education Scheme, organised by the South East region STEM officers. However, this year the scheme was operated online and therefore no benefits were gained in terms of students meeting and working alongside real engineers. Amanda secured sponsorship for three teams, which is a record. Balfour Beatty sponsored two teams and Southern Water two teams. The students met with their mentoring engineers at the college and regularly via Teams.

It’s been a stressful experience, but we’ve learnt so much about engineering, the process and the importance of thorough research and accurate data. Working with the Balfour Beatty engineers was a great experience, and a real privilege to have our ideas taken seriously by experienced engineers Freddie, James and Sam
