Household Cavalry Band - Hurstpierpoint College

Household Cavalry Band

Last Tuesday, The Band of the Household Cavalry visited the college for a day of music-making.

The purpose of their visit was to promote their regiment and the varied careers available in the British Army. They worked with Hurst’s talented Music Scholars for most of the day who played at an extremely high level.

At the musical peak of the day over 70 musicians from both the Prep and Senior School played in a workshop in the Music School, performing pieces from the band’s regular concert repertoire such as Star Wars, Danny Boy and various military marches. The sound was fantastic and all pupils commented on how much fun they had playing to such a high standard and rehearsing exciting music alongside accomplished professional musicians.

During the second half of the day the band performed to the Combined Cadet Force and Prep School – this performance also included musicians from the Senior and Prep School who braved the stage in front of a 400 plus audience to play alongside members of the largest military band in the British Army.

The band then took the time to work with Hurst’s newly formed Cadet Band, and some brave volunteers who learnt to march in amongst a band. Although the band usually plays on horseback they were just as adept on foot.

All involved had a fantastic day and we look forward to having the Band of Household Cavalry back again soon Major Sam Amos, CCF Contingent Commander
