From Waste to Growth - Hurstpierpoint College

Year 1 pupils enjoyed a special visit to the School Farm as they discovered how Hurst’s commitment to sustainability helps turn waste into new life.

Earlier this term, 13 tonnes of compost, created from Hurst’s food and green waste, were delivered to the farm by Farmer Tom from Full Circle Farm in East Grinstead. The compost will play an important role in enriching the soil and supporting future crops.

Armed with their mini wheelbarrows and trowels, the Year 1 pupils then got to work planting vegetables in the freshly delivered compost. By using compost made from the School’s own waste, the children were able to see first-hand how natural materials can be recycled and returned to the earth.

The visit brought classroom learning to life, helping pupils understand the journey from food waste to healthy soil and, ultimately, to the next crop. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn about sustainability, food production and caring for the environment while getting hands-on in the great outdoors.

By planting into compost made from Hurst’s own waste, Year 1 completed the circle, transforming yesterday’s leftovers into tomorrow’s harvest.
