On the penultimate day of term, the Junior Prep School held their first Community Action Day. This initiative is a regular fixture in the Senior School, and the purpose is to engage all pupils in doing good by serving their local community.
Reception class carried out a litter pick around the school grounds. Year 1 made bird feeders from recycled packaging and threaded Cheerios onto pipe cleaners for the birds in their gardens at home.
Year 2 wrote letters of thanks to staff at Hurst who work behind the scenes, from maintenance workers to the cooks, nurses to the housekeepers.
Years 3 and 5 went to Lancing Beach to join in with a beach litter pick. The pupils were surprised by what was collected—items ranged from a barbecue grill to a bikini, a Barbie shoe, and a plethora of crisp packets.
Year 4 visited Tripletrees Care Home in Burgess Hill to talk to residents. They played Bingo, which was a favourite amongst the pupils, and new to most of them, along with Uno. Pupils also read to the residents and sang songs from their recent summer production.
Year 6 went to Full Circle Farm, near East Grinstead, where they were expecting to help tidy up. Instead, they found themselves clipping lambs’ toenails, stapling tags into sheep ears, and cleaning out the chicken coops. They also picked wild garlic and berries.
Overall, it was an enriching day for everyone involved.
