Engineering students make big bang

The Upper Sixth engineering team claimed the runners-up spot in the senior engineering category at the national digital finals of the Big Bang Competition, with their project Improving coagulation and flocculation in wastewater treatment.

The Big Bang Competition recognises and rewards young people’s achievements in all areas of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), whilst providing them with the opportunity to build their skills and confidence in project-based work.

Sponsored by Southern Water, our team of Isabella S, Matthieu B, Olivia H and George R – who received £250 as their prize – impressed the judges with their enthusiasm and quality of work. Last year, they were named as Young Engineers of the Year for the South East region and were narrowly beaten to a gold-level UK Industrial Cadets Award.

The team have won a number of awards for their project and now they have crowned it by achieving the runners-up spot in a national science and engineering competition. As a school we are gaining a pretty good track record! Amanda Jayne, Mistress-in-charge of STEM
