Shell students started their Hurst athletics career in the Sussex Independent Schools Diamond League (SISDL) – created and organised by the college’s sports department – with brilliant performances by all involved.
Special mentions to Cara Mc and Lottie S for remaining undefeated in the junior girls 100m and 75m hurdles respectively and Tabby Brown for breaking the SISDL record in the 300m and remaining undefeated in the 800m. Oscar M dominated the sprints remaining undefeated in both the 100m and 200m, breaking the 200m record along the way. Ali R-D broke the 1500m record in round two and then went on to break that record on finals day.
In the inter age group the Remove, who were enjoying their debut season in the Diamond League, were joined by our Fifth Formers, who were competing for the first time since Shell. There were stand out performances by Lily S, who was undefeated in both the 300m and 800m, breaking records in both events; Ronan D, who dominated the 100m hurdles and broke the record; and Max A, who dominated both the 200m and shot put.
Our senior teams were captained by Ciara D and Jamie A who led by example. Ciara remained undefeated in the 100m hurdles – as did the senior girls relay team, breaking the record at the first meeting – and Alice W broke the 800m record. The final race of the 2021 Diamond League was the senior boys relay and proved the highlight of the afternoon. Hurst and Ardingly had been battling against each other every week with Ardingly taking the win in the two previous weeks. A brilliant performance by our boys saw Jamie just pip Ardingly to take the win a very close race.
