Crescent House at 20 - Hurstpierpoint College

This year marks twenty years since the founding of Crescent House, a significant chapter in the College’s recent history. Opened in 2005 and formally blessed during the Etheldreda Sunday service, Crescent House quickly established an identity rooted in energy, ambition, and shared purpose. The blessing of the House and its banner was a defining moment, with Anish M, Crescent’s first House Captain, carrying the banner to the altar and signalling the arrival of a new House within the College.

Under the guidance of founding Housemaster Mr Leeper, Crescent made an immediate impact across School life. On the sports fields, Rugby emerged as an early strength, with many Fifth Form pupils contributing to an unbeaten U16 team coached by Mr Leeper. Success was not limited to Rugby, as Crescent also performed strongly in Athletics, Cross Country, and Cricket. Academically, the House showed early promise, with high numbers achieving strong challenge grades and five of seven Lower Sixth students joining the Oxbridge and Best group.

House life extended well beyond lessons and fixtures. Outings, pool competitions, fundraising, and an end of year barbecue brought together boys from across the year groups, helping to shape a House culture built on pride and participation. Even in House Music, where Crescent finished last, pupils eagerly approached the competition with humour and confidence in their performance of Eye of the Tiger

These foundations were celebrated on Saturday 6 September, when former Crescent House pupils and staff returned to mark the twentieth anniversary. The day began with tours of the College and Houses, followed by a first look at the new swimming pool. Guests then gathered at Eastfield to support the 1st XV against a fierce opponent before the celebrations concluded with a relaxed barbecue on Chevron Lawns.

The anniversary offered an opportunity to reflect on two decades of achievement and connection, and to look ahead with confidence to the future of Crescent House.
