Coastal Comparisons - Hurstpierpoint College

At the beginning of October, our Lower Sixth Geography students had a great first field trip for their NEA work, visiting Newhaven and Seaford beaches.

The morning was spent at Newhaven, where they measured beach profiles, investigated longshore drift, and analysed sediment size at different points along the coast. In the afternoon, the group carried out similar investigations at Seaford, comparing results and discussing how coastal processes varied between the two sites.

The day gave everyone a chance to practise a wide range of fieldwork skills, from data collection and sampling to observation and analysis. Pupils worked well in groups and showed real enthusiasm for the practical side of geography.

The trip finished with some field sketches of Seaford’s famous white cliffs; a great way to round off a busy and enjoyable day of handson coastal geography, which also served as excellent preparation for those planning to focus on coasts in their NEA projects.
