Careers Guest Speakers Event - Hurstpierpoint College

Shell pupils took part in a Careers Guest Speakers event designed to support them as they consider their GCSE choices. With decisions approaching, the session offered practical insight into a range of career routes and the subjects that helped shape them.

The first speaker was Old Hurstian Cameron Stevenson, now a First Officer with Wizz Air. Cameron left Hurst in 2022, having studied A levels in Economics, Business, and Sociology. He went on to read Aviation Management with Commercial Pilot Training at the University of the West of England, completing his degree in 2025, alongside commercial pilot training at Skyborne, which he finished in 2024.

Tabitha Streater, who left Hurst in 2017, shared a contrasting but equally engaging pathway. After studying A levels in Drama, Geography, and Design Technology, she completed a degree in Technical Theatre: Design Realisation at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2020. Following several years as a freelance scenic artist and painter, she now works for JW Creative Ltd across film, television, and theatre. Tabitha spoke honestly about freelance life, highlighting both its flexibility and the need for resilience.

The third speaker, Mr Stubbs, described a significant career change. After more than 15 years in financial services at Morgan Stanley, where he worked as a Vice President in Equity Derivatives and Product Sales, he moved into teaching and has since been a Teacher of Mathematics at Hurst. His journey prompted thoughtful discussion about how careers can evolve over time.

Ms Coar also shared her experience, explaining how she studied STEM A levels with the intention of working in Environmental Health, before choosing to become a Sociology Teacher.

Across all talks, several key messages emerged. The speakers agreed that they did not regret their GCSE choices and stressed the value of studying subjects they enjoyed. They spoke candidly about the challenge of maintaining a work life balance, the importance of feeling fulfilled in one’s work, and the value of work experience. Pupils were also encouraged to build strong networks early, including friendships formed at School, which can prove valuable in the future.
