Awards galore at MUN conference

Hurst’s MUN (Model United Nations) team members set off bright and early last Saturday morning for the Gordon’s School conference. Their first time at a formal conference since last October.

The first day of the conference began with a concise opening statement before the Hurst delegates went into committees prepared to barter votes for their resolutions. Our delegates were extremely persuasive as they succeeded in pushing through all their resolutions. Intense debates ensued during the rest of day one in the following committees: SPECPOL (Special Political and Decolonisation), SOCHUM (Social, Cultural and Humanitarian), DISEC (Disarmament and International Security) and the Environment. Our delegates spoke confidently with well-researched speeches, which allowed many of their resolutions to be voted through. The day ended with a formal dinner and a speech from a British Foreign Office diplomat which inspired all attendees as they looked ahead to day two.

Lively debating

Day two began with more resolutions being discussed in the respective committees until the delegates were faced with a crisis. The question posed was surrounding North Korea taking over South Korea which resulted in an impassioned and controversial debate. The delegates handled this well, even with the rather frustrating veto rights. By the end, members of the Hurst team felt a sense of accomplishment in tackling intense, inter-committee debating. The resolutions passed in committee were then pushed forward for debate in the General Assembly. Whilst the General Assembly was cut short due to time restrictions, Hurst delegates performed well once again.

As part of the closing ceremony, a number of awards were presented. The Hurst team won several, including Outstanding Delegation for Japan and Outstanding Delegates for Amelia P, Tom D, Theo T and Joe A.

The award presentations to Hurst students concluded a momentously successful conference for our Model United Nations team Tom D, Lower Sixth student
