Annual Concerto Concert - Hurstpierpoint College

Annual Concerto Concert

The annual Concerto Concert, which took place last week, was an opportunity for some of our Upper Sixth musicians to play concerto movements with orchestral accompaniment.

This year, Matilda P played Mendelssohn’s Concerstück for two clarinets alongside her teacher, Mr Sutton. Matilda has worked hard on this tricky piece and played with confidence and accuracy. The audience gave Matilda the ovation she richly deserved.

Following this, the College Orchestra played two pieces which they have been working on for some time. Both pieces were difficult in their own way. Chabrier’s España is an orchestral favourite in which the ensemble rarely plays at the same time. A master of orchestral colour, Chabrier uses instruments inventively and the College Orchestra gave a spirited and energetic performance of this piece. The second performance was Dvorak’s Slavonic Dance No. 8. This is a fast and furious piece that the orchestra really got its teeth into. Slavonic rhythms abound alongside catchy melody and there was a real sense of enjoyment in this performance.
