A Little Piece of History - Hurstpierpoint College

On Friday 14 October, Hurst CCF marked an important moment for the contingent as the VIth Form platoon was officially renamed Lambert Platoon. George Lambert MC, a former teacher, Housemaster, and Second Master of the College, served at Hurst across two periods, having left to join the Army during the Second World War. His contribution is remembered in Chapel where a memorial plaque commemorates his service to both the School and the country.

The decision to rename the platoon grew from discussions between Lt Col Amos and 2Lt Davies earlier this year. They noted that all other year groups were already named after former contingent commanders, and with a larger group of VIth Form cadets than usual, it felt the right moment to recognise Major Lambert’s legacy.

With support from Gareth Doodes, Mary-Lou Rowlands, and Leigh-Anne Morrell, Mr Davies coordinated the parade and the arrangements for the day. The College was delighted to welcome both of Major Lambert’s children, who are OJs, and who were pleased to attend and support the occasion.

After a tour of the School with Mr Taylor-West and lunch with several CCF instructors, the family joined cadets on parade. The Regimental Sergeant Major read the citation that detailedthe outstanding bravery shown by Major Lambert in the events that led to the award of his Military Cross. The presence of his medals added further significance to the moment.

Meeting the family of a man who gave so much to Hurst and seeing cadets parade in his name was an honour for us all, strengthening the connection between the College’s past and present. Lambert Platoon now carries a name rooted in service, leadership, and commitment, values that continue to guide the CCF today.
