Hurst College marked a significant sporting milestone with a centenary celebration at Richmond Athletic Ground to honour the introduction of the sport to the School 100 years ago. Inrecognition of the occasion, Rugby School, the birthplace of Rugby, joined us for two competitive fixtures that brought together each school’s 1st XV team, pupils, parents, Old Hurst Johnians (OJs), Old Rugbeians, staff, and friends of the College.
Before the matches, players enjoyed a well-attended lunch with families, staff, OJs and Old Rugbeians. Soon after, and as the OJ fixture began, both 1st XV squads travelled to Twickenham Stadium, the home of England Rugby, for a guided tour. The group followed the players’ route through the changing rooms and out towards the pitch, taking in the scale of the national venue. In good spirits, Hurst’s 1st XV gathered in the tunnel to call out “Eagles”, their team’s name, echoing the matchday traditions of the stadium.
The afternoon of Rugby continued with a lively contest between Old Hurst Johnians and Old Rugbeians. Both sides competed with commitment, and the OJs secured a 36-12 victory.
The fixture between Hurst 1st XV and Rugby School 1st XV followed. Rugby School controlled much of the first half, yet Hurst responded with focus after the break. As the match entered its closing minutes, Rugby held a narrow one-point lead and tension rose around the stadium. Jonnie S then stepped forward to score a decisive penalty, giving Hurst a 22-20 advantage. A final Rugby School penalty attempt dropped short, and Hurst claimed a hard-fought win.
The day highlighted the strength of Rugby at the College as it enters its second century.
