The Vegetable Avengers - Hurstpierpoint College

The ‘Eat Them to Defeat Them’ national campaign commenced on March 10 and made its return to Hurst after a successful introduction last year. The campaign on its sixth official year inspires the children to embrace healthy eating, with pupils in the prep school taking up the challenge.

The entire Hurst Catering team welcomed 52 new starters from Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 to help ‘Chef Stuart’ as the kitchen was overrun by vegetables. The Catering team asked the children for their help, and created the ultimate superhero academy where the children would take on the vegetables daily at lunchtime in the dining hall and win the fight against the evil vegetables!

The dining hall was decorated, and all the superheroes wore their masks to help defeat the vegetables. The menus were made to be child-friendly and engaging alongside the reward and recognition schemes where the ‘vegetable raiders’ could log their vegetable points for the vegetable destruction. The three classes were split into teams. Reception were Team Sweetcorn, Year 1 were Team Butternut Squash and Year 2 were Team Broccoli.

Year 1 took the early lead in the charts and pushed forward to win the title of the most vegetables defeated in a week. The class achieved 88% of the stickers available displaying great teamwork and empty plates. The Catering Team said their favourite story of the week was from Amelia L in Reception who asked for more green beans so she could stuff them in her penne pasta on day one.

Alongside the vegetable avengers in the dining hall, Sodexo also held a chefs table in the prep school. Year 3 and 4 faced the vegetables as they invaded the chefs table and hid inside some of the homemade protein balls and smoothies. All the pupils were brave and defeated the powerful and nutritious sweet potato, carrots and beetroot.

Victory over the vegetables!
