The Hunchback of Notre Dame - Hurstpierpoint College

This year’s Senior School drama production was the famous The Hunchback of Notre Dame, a novel by Victor Hugo, published in 1831. Set in 15th-century Paris, it tells the tragic story of Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer of Notre Dame Cathedral, and his unrequited love for Esmeralda, a beautiful and kind-hearted Romani girl.

The New Bury Theatre was transformed to evoke the ambiance of a medieval cathedral. Innovative touches included the use of incense to create a church-like aroma, enhancing the immersive experience. The house music featured a Latin mass, and religious iconography, particularly depictions of Mary, added depth to the setting.

This production marked the first time the college employed a double cast, allowing more students to participate and share the stage. The production was over six performances: two matinees and four evening shows, with each of the two casts performing three times.

A total of 77 student actors, along with six student technicians, contributed to the success of the show, and showcased the dedication and talents of the cast. The technicians played a vital role, ensuring the seamless execution of the production.

Henry B’s performance was highlighted as “absolutely excellent,” and Izzy G stood out by performing all six shows, the only main character to do so, earning recognition for her dedication. The collaboration with Neil Matthews, Director of Music and the professional band elevated the musical quality, providing a polished and dynamic sound that complemented the students’ performances.

Director Alex Ward expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “It was an absolute joy to work with such enthusiastic and talented young people. It was a real team effort, every person in the cast worked extremely hard and produced an outstanding production.”
