The Boar's Head Tradition - Hurstpierpoint College

Last week, we celebrated our annual Boar’s Head Procession and Feast—an Oxford tradition brought to Hurst by the first Headmaster, Rev’d Edward Lowe in 1853.

After Evensong, the choir lead the Boar’s Head in a candlelit procession through the cloisters, followed by a celebratory feast as a thank you to all those who contribute to Chapel services, especially the choir and sacristans.

Dating back to medieval times (and first noted at The Queen’s College, Oxford in 1395), the boar’s head symbolises honour and majesty. While the custom has largely faded elsewhere, it lives on at The Queen’s College, St John’s College, Oxford, Hereford Cathedral, and here at Hurst College.
