Sociology in Action - Hurstpierpoint College

At the end of November, the UVI Sociology students had the opportunity to engage with some of the most prominent voices in contemporary sociology at the “Sociology in Action” event. The conference featured thought-provoking discussions on globalisation, disability, gender-based violence, racism in education, and the role of religion in identity.

Notable speakers included Professor Martin Albrow, who explored the complexities of globalisation; Tom Shakespeare, who delved into the sociological dimensions of disability; and Marian Duggan, who examined strategies to combat gender-based violence. Additionally, Kalwant Bhopal addressed the impact of the Black Lives Matter movement on education, while Lisa Oakley explored how religion shapes individual and social identities.

This enriching event provided UVI students with valuable insights into how sociology can address real-world issues and transform society and they came away full of enthusiasm and inspiration from the speakers they heard. A great event to prepare these pupils for university, the majority of which are going on to study sociology-based degrees.
