Community Life

Community Life

We value our local and global community links and Senior School pupils regularly support the local charities and organisations.

.

Brighton Marathon Charity event

A team of Hurst students and staff run a water and energy drinks station for runners along the route of the marathon. Music students also perform for the runners and spectators. Our minibuses are used to support the Brighton Marathon on the day of the event.

Charleston Trust Community Partnership

Hurst is an Associate Partner of the Charleston Trust and sponsors the Charleston Festival in May and the Charleston Small Wonder Festival in September.

Community Action Day Charity involvement

Every year in June the Senior School organises a Community Action Day where all pupils from Shell (Year 9) to Upper Sixth visit more than 30 locations across Sussex to help charities, schools and community organisations. The pupils carry out a variety of work such as gardening, painting, washing mini-buses and volunteering in charity shops.

Organisations over the past few years have included:

Hickstead Showground Sponsorship

The college has close links with the world-famous Hickstead Showground. Hurst has sponsored the National Schools & Pony Club Show Jumping Championships at The All England Jumping Course at Hickstead since 2009 and hosts a Schools Show Jumping Competition every September

House Charity Events Charity fundraising

Each house has the opportunity to raise money for selected school charities throughout the school year. Recent charity fundraising has included organising a professional Magic Show in aid of MIND and holding cake sales to raise funds for the Samaritans.

Hurst Festival Community partnership

Every September the college supports the Hurst Village Festival by hosting events or lending our facilities to the festival. Hurst Festival events run by the college include:

Cake at the College organised by the college Music School
Music Scholars’ Concert organised by the college Music School
Play in a day – in the Hurst Drama Studio
Life Drawing – in the Hurst Art School

Hurst Players sponsorship

We sponsor the local amateur dramatic society, the Hurst Players based in Hurstpierpoint Village.

Malawi Project Charity Involvement

Students carry out fundraising for our biannual trip to Malawi. Whilst there the group help to build houses in our partner village, Chilingani.

Links with local schools

Links have been formed with a number of local schools including Warden Park, a maintained school, and we have supported a number of joint ventures with this school.

Remembrance Day

The college is active in supporting UK Remembrance Day every November and a special Remembrance Service is held as a tribute to the 108 Hurst boys and four members of staff who lost their lives during the First World War.

In 2014 Senior School pupils volunteered to help ‘plant’ ceramic poppies for the art installation at the Tower of London to commemorate 100 years since Britain’s involvement in the First World War. The college also purchased five poppies to display with the College Chapel War Memorial and the money raised from the sale of the poppies went to The Royal British Legion, Help for Heroes, Coming Home, Cobseo, Combat Stress and SSAFA.

In 2014 Hurst launched an online war memorial record; Hurst at War.
