Science Week 2025: Change and Adapt - Hurstpierpoint College

This year’s British Science Week was a success, filled with hands-on experiments, exciting demonstrations, and a whole lot of fun. From Reception to Year 6, every pupil had the chance to dive into the world of science through specially planned sessions designed to spark curiosity and a love of learning.

A highlight of the week was the guest appearances from a variety of our Science faculty members, who delivered engaging ‘wow’ factor demonstrations. These incredible showcases included magic beakers, skittle diffusion, flame tests, and the ever-popular elephant’s toothpaste experiment! Pupils were also captivated by demonstrations of fire writing, traffic light flasks, and the astonishing transformation of copper coins into ‘gold’.

In addition to the demonstrations, students rolled up their sleeves to participate in interactive activities such as chromatography and acid and alkali testing. These hands-on experiments provided a fantastic opportunity for young scientists to explore and question the world around them.

A key focus of this year’s Science Week was the theme ‘Change and Adapt’, which encouraged pupils to think critically about how science influences adaptation in nature, technology, and beyond. To further engage with this theme, students across all year groups have been busy creating entries for a nationwide poster competition. The best entries from each year group will be submitted to the national competition at the end of term.
