Rugby in Lisbon - Hurstpierpoint College

In October, the Year 7 and Year 8 rugby teams went on a thrilling five-day tour to Lisbon, Portugal. It was an action-packed adventure, full of rugby, the beach, surfing, and unforgettable memories.

After a very early start and some airport delays, the boys landed safely in Lisbon and upon arriving at their hotel, the team were thrilled to discover they were located just 100 meters from one of Portugal’s best surfing beaches. They took full advantage of this by heading to the beach before a well-deserved dinner and an early night.

After an energising buffet breakfast, the boys headed to Cascais Rugby Club for a morning training session. In the afternoon, they returned to the beach, where Nerf battles, sandcastle building, and an impromptu game of beach rugby which filled the day with excitement and laughter. The day was finished off with their first set of rugby matches against Agronomia Rugby Club, where the boys displayed both skill and determination. Despite the tough competition, the games were a success, with everyone showing great sportsmanship and teamwork.

Day three was a break from rugby, offering a chance to explore Lisbon. They started with a tour of the iconic Benfica Football Stadium, just a day before Benfica’s Champions League match against Feyenoord. The boys were thrilled to see the behind-the-scenes action in a world-class stadium, and they got a taste of professional football culture up close. Afterwards, they all ventured into Lisbon’s city centre, where Mr Dewey treated the team to a very memorable McDonald’s feast (apparently the most expensive one he’d ever bought!) to refuel for an evening of bowling and arcade games. It was the perfect way to unwind and bond as a group.

The fourth day brought another incredible experience: a surfing lesson! With the beach practically at their doorstep, the boys eagerly took to the waves, some standing up on their boards for the first time. The day’s grand finale was their second round of rugby matches, this time against Direito Rugby Club. The matches were competitive but fun, and the hosts treated them to a fantastic post-game BBQ. The evening ended with a heartfelt singalong, as both teams celebrated the camaraderie before the team headed back home the next morning.

The Lisbon rugby tour offered more than just competitive games; it was a chance for the boys to explore a new culture, try new sports, and form closer bonds with each other. From beach rugby to sightseeing, and the thrill of both friendly and competitive matches, the tour provided lasting memories and endorsed the spirit of teamwork and resilience. It was a brilliant trip that left everyone eager for the next adventure!
