Physicists Embarks on Exciting CERN Trip - Hurstpierpoint College

Upper Sixth physicists were fortunate enough to head to Switzerland at the beginning of November, to visit CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research and operates the world’s largest particle physics laboratory.

Arriving late in Geneva on Thursday night, the students were up bright and early on Friday morning for an unforgettable day at CERN. The trip enabled the students to not only tour the incredible research facility, but they were able to participate and observe a variety of experiments including making cloud chambers and observing the presence of electrons, muons and alpha particles. The students also got to visit the interactive exhibit before getting to tour the CERN Control Centre (CCC) and visit the ALICE mission, whose goal is to observe primordial interactions which simulate the early universe.

After an incredible day at CERN the pupils had some time to explore the beautiful scenery of Lake Geneva and the city centre before heading home. The adventure has already sparked new conversations back in the classroom, and the experience has ignited their imaginations for what’s possible in the ever-evolving world of physics.
