In an exciting and challenging day at the National Indoor Student Skiing Championships, Year 7 students Harry and Harrison B stepped up to compete with senior skiers from across the nation. Held at the Hemel Snow Centre, the event was designed for skiers aged 13 to 18, making it an unusual environment for younger competitors like Harry and Harrison, both just starting their competitive skiing journey.
Both boys took on this new role with grit and enthusiasm, knowing they would face more advanced competitors and the technical difficulty of navigating “long gates,” used only in senior competitions. Unlike the shorter, soft poles used in junior races, long gates demand a greater level of skill and strength, especially when racing against older and more experienced athletes.
Mr. Simkins praised the courage and performance of both and gave a special mention to Harry “Harry really stepped up to do this and deserves a big pat on the back for his effort.” Competing in his first senior event, Harry finished with a very respectable time, outracing 75 other competitors, a testament to his determination and emerging skill in the sport.
Harry shared his excitement about the experience, mentioning that it was both an honour and a thrill to compete alongside the “older kids” He admitted to feeling nervous at first but said that the challenge motivated him to push himself.
After their impressive debut in the seniors, Harry and Harrison are already looking forward to future competitions, eager to build on their performances.
