MUN at Brentwood - Hurstpierpoint College

The Model United Nations (MUN) conference at Brentwood School was an exciting event where students simulated the workings of the United Nations, honing their skills in diplomacy, critical thinking, and collaboration. Divided into four committees—Social, Economics and Finance, Security, and the General Assembly—the conference tackled global challenges such as healthcare funding, minimum wage policies, human trafficking, cybersecurity, and dealing with hostile powers. Despite receiving their assigned countries just two days prior, Hurst pupils excelled, confidently engaging in debates and making impactful contributions.

In the Economics and Finance Committee, students explored complex topics like equitable healthcare access and minimum wage policies, clashing with other delegations, including a particularly resolute team from Gabon. The Social Committee achieved success by passing a resolution on combating human trafficking by highlighting the importance of cross-border co-operation, stricter penalties for traffickers and increased funding for victim rehabilitation.

Meanwhile the Security Council faced a stalemate on cybersecurity despite the determined efforts of the Hurst delegates. In the General Assembly, students passionately debated strategies to manage threats from hostile powers in possession of advanced weapons, leading to a compromise resolution with contingency measures to ensure global security.

Hurst pupils’ performance throughout the conference was outstanding, with several stepping up to deliver compelling speeches for and against resolutions in the General Assembly. Notably, Kate and Imogen were awarded Highly Commended Delegate honours for their representation of South Africa and Ecuador, respectively. The event was a testament to the pupils’ dedication, with all delegates growing in confidence and showcasing their ability to navigate complex international issues.
